The International Biennial of Graphic Arts is a unique cultural event in Slovenia and one of the greatest exhibitions of its kind in the world. For several decade it has given Ljubljana an indelible impression and stimulated the cultural life of the city.

Over four decades, local and foreign visitors have followed the graphic creativity of artists from over fifty countries world-wide. The Biennial was organised for the first time in 1955 and has continued its basic concept over all these years without a break: to provide a review of contemporary world art in reproductions of graphics embracing all techniques, schools and movements.

During this period, a full three generations of Slovene graphic artists have become directly established as well as all the graduates at the Ljubljana Graphics School of the Academy of Fine Arts (known throughout Europe, as it is acknowledged as one of the best training establishments of its kind) who have faced the world challenge of embracing new concepts and messages during these exhibitions.

Over these decades the International Exhibition of Graphic Arts has presented and established the names of artists such as: Armin Landek, Henri Georges Adam, Pierre Soulages, Yozo Hamaguchi, Robert Rauschenberg, Victor Vasarely, Antoni Tapies, Janez Bernik, Kosuke Kimura, Miroslav Šutej, Akira Matsumoto, Tetsuya Noda, Adriana Šimotova, Jiri Anderle, Shusaku Arakawa, Susan Rothenberg, Dan Allison, Haydee Landing, David Salle, A.R. Penck, Emil Schumaher, Max Bill and others.

Twenty-six American artists will participate at the Ljubljana Graphics Biennial this year. The selection was made by Ms. Marjorie Devon, Director of the Tamarind Institute in New Mexico. The Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana will therefore be exhibiting 26 graphics and lithographic prints by American artists.
