Theatre

Ljubljana possesses a rich history of theatre. Permanent theatre seasons were held even hundreds of years ago.

Today in the capital city there are nine permanent professional theatres and several professional theatre troupes. The Opera, Drama and Ballet companies have the status of national theatres. In Ljubljana we've got the Puppet Theatre, Municipal Theatre of Ljubljana, Mladinsko Theatre, and the Šentjakob Theatre; a strong influence on theatre is given by experimental groups, most of whom are focused around Glej Experimental Theatre, Koreodrama, and the Ana Monroe Theatre.

Over the last few years the following productions have become well established and received numerous awards at the greatest international festivals, where they have been performed:

The Retrograde Quests of Dragan Živadinov (Drama Observatorij Zenit), then spectacular productions by Tomaž Pandur  (Sheherezade, etc) and leading productions by Vito Taufer (Odyssey and Son, Alice in Wonderland, Silence, Silence..) performed by the Mladinsko Theatre in Ljubljana as well as several productions by Glej Experimental Theatre such as Betontanc (physical theatre).

We should also mention the Puppet Theatre who participated in World Puppet festivals by adapting theatre productions from the beginning of the century as well as their own productions. Eloquent proof that puppetry is strongly rooted in the theatrical tradition of the city is provided by the fact that in 1992 Ljubljana hosted the XVI World Puppetry Congress and the UNIMA Festival.

The rich theatrical tradition has dictated the formation of the Museum of Theatre four decades ago which developed into the Museum of Slovene Theatre and Film.
