University of Ljubljana Although the commencement of the university education in Ljubljana can be traced back to the end of the 16th century, the University in Ljubljana was founded in 1919. With time it has grown and has been expanded so that it consists today of 20 faculties, 3 academies, 6 colleges, the National and University Library and the Central Technical Library. Today, the number of students currently studying and training for future careers has now risen to about 35,000. At present, the University employs about 1,700 professors and assistants who perform the two fundamental functions - education and research. The University of Ljubljana has its own University Research and Development Centre and University Computer Centre. In the year 1998 there were awarded approx. 200 doctor's degrees and we are proud of many distinguished experts and scientists who graduated from the University of Ljubljana. Also, due to some of its scientific accomplishments the University may be placed among renowned European universities. After the independence of the state of Slovenia in 1991, the University has established many new links with other European and American universities. At the moment there are some 40 inter-university agreements on the basis of which exchange of teaching staff or common research projects are realized. |
