MICHUM POETRY WORKSHOP
Slovenia and the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga
One form of cooperation between American and Slovenian writers, of value to Slovenia, is the seminar for modern poetry at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. It is led by a great friend of Slovenia and Slovenian poetry, professor Dr Richard Jackson. Within the Michum Poetry Workshop, which is the most eminent of its kind in America, he has designed a number of ways to encounter poetry and its creators. More than ten Slovenian authors have thus far taken part in readings or conversations with students in Chattanooga. They also founded the Poetry Miscellany publishing house, which issues the Mala Revija magazine and booklets of poetry by Slovenian poets. At this time, over twenty-five Slovenian poets have been presented; the magazine publishes interviews with them and offers deeper reflection upon Slovenia and Slovenian literature.

Moreover, each May, Prof. Jackson brings his students to Slovenia for a study holiday. In this context they meet their peers from the University of Ljubljana, participate in lectures, read their poetry or share their thoughts about it. They regularly take part in the international Pen conference in Bled, at which, for a number of years, Prof. Jackson has also shared his papers.

Prof. Jackson was also an esteemed guest at our second international literary conference, Vilenica, for which he prepared a variety of contributions: from his poems to comprehensive essays demonstrating his profound knowledge of our literature. He has also written several introductory essays to anthologies of Slovenian literature and to books of poetry by individual poets which have been published in America. His most recent contribution to this prized collaboration was the latest anthology of Slovenian poets (59 altogether) which was published immediately before his arrival in Slovenia this year. Due to his vital role in the presentation of our literature abroad, the Slovenian Writers' Association has recommended him for a state award.
