GLOSSARY OF SLOVENE - AMERICAN RELATIONS

P

Potica is one of the few Slovene words one might find in an English-language dictionary. A Slovene national dish. Much desired desert in New York City. You can find it in that little coffee house with green awning on Columbus Avenue between 64th and 65th Street, but only if you go early.

POTICA - From the Slovene gastronomic treasure-chest we have to select an excellent, original, almost sculpture-like cake. This sweet nut bread, with rolled-out sheets of dough crafted into a variety of shapes, is an essential ingredient at Slovene tables on Easter and Christmas. With pride we can say that we have not found potica in any other country, and that it really is a Slovene speciality. The recipes are a kind of family secret, passing from generation to generation in the same way as folk songs.

The circles of the Progressive Slovene Women of America produce poticas for bake sales benefiting Slovene groups and local charities.
