James L. Oberstar, M.C has Slovene ancestors. In 1974 Jim Oberstar won his first term in Congress. Now in his 12th term he is the ranking Democrat on the full Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

James L. Oberstar, M.C.- who has Slovene ancestors was born in Chisholm, Minnesota on September 10, 1934. Jim's Iron Range roots shaped his future. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of St. Thomas in St..Paul in 1956. He continued his education by winning a scholarship to the College of Europe in Belgium. Following his tenure as a language teacher for over three years in Haiti, he returned to the United States to serve Minnesota as an aide to his predecessor in Congress, Rep. John Blatnik.

When Blatnik announced his retirement in 1974, Jim sought and won his first term in Congress.

Now in his 12th term, Jim Oberstar is the ranking Democrat on the full Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Jim is well respected by members of both parties for his expertise in transportation, public infrastructure and foreign policy matters. His fluency in French makes him a frequent interview subject for French-language radio and television services around the world.
