VOINOVICH, George (1936)
George Voinovich, a political leader with Slovene and Serbian roots. Raised, like Lausche, in Cleveland's neighbourhood, Voinovich followed his service as Cleveland's mayor in the 1980s by becoming governor of Ohio, an office to which he was reelected once more. During his tenure as mayor, Voinovich worked effectively to bring back the lost luster of his city. He promoted public-private partnerships, stressing the social responsibilities of the business community and the necessity of cooperative effort by all segments of the community.

George Voinovich, now Senator of Ohio, has visited Slovenia four times. On his last visit to Slovenia in 1995, a large business delegation accompanied him.
