©TUKELJ, LEON (1898)

Leon ©tukelj Honorary Member of New York Athletic Club

At a formal ceremony at the New York Athletic Club, the oldest living Olympic winner Leon ©tukelj became the second member of the NYAC. Along with the American athlete Jessie Owens, his picture is exhibited in the New York Hall of Fame.

History does repeat itself. While at the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, ©tukelj met the American athletics legend, Jessie Owens. From that time, ©tukelj still keeps a picture of them standing next to each other. Once again, even today, they stand together.

Regardless of his age, he can still do certain gymnastic movements which cannot be repeated even by those who are 80 years younger than him.

Leon ©tukelj received numerous recognition for his achievements and his loyalty to the principles of sport. In 1987 at the Zagreb University Games, the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch presented him with the Olympic Order. In June 1997 his name was written in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

With the help of the NYAC, the ceremony which was organised by a well-known Slovene businessman Mr. Emil Gaspari, was attended by many Slovenians who live in the US, among other distinguished guests were also the representatives of NYAC, Mr. Agonian, Mr. Ingrassia, Mr. Jarvis; and a very special guest Mr. Kenneth Podziba, NYC Sports Commissioner.
